We hear so much about meaningful work! Work that is life altering, and possibly world changing! With the shift of society, the need to serve is greater than ever. To give a hand up to those who need it both locally, and globally. We have moved more to an inclusive ‘we’ society.
And it’s about time! It’s not as though it came overnight. In fact, the Pendulum Project tells us this is ‘we’ time. And with access to global news and events, we are far more informed and connected than ever. And yet, at times, people report feeling anonymous, ambiguous and invisible.
I get that. Having been a best kept secret for all those years in every area of my life, I understand how disheartening and lonely this can be. Couple this with the need to do meaningful work, is it any wonder people fill discontent?
Have you been there? Have you questioned your work and its impact in the world – wondered if it’s meaningful?
Naturally we all want to feel like what we do matters, of course we do. Who wouldn’t want what we’re dedicating our time, energy and attention to, to have significance?
If you have known me a while, you know I am an advocate of living your legacy. This means moving from best kept secret to success in life love and business so that our life creates ripples, and impacts others in a positive way.
Your Best Work is not only Meaningful, it’s Important!
When we are doing our BEST work, the work we are intended to do, we are in service and our work is important. It doesn’t matter what kind of work it is; what matters is that it is YOUR best work.
The BEST and Nothing Less!
Over the years I moved around a lot and had many jobs. When I was younger, I worked at a hospital in housekeeping. It was not a glorious job by any means. Each shift I was assigned 32 rooms and four lounge areas to clean and tidy. To get everything completed on time I had to hustle. I was often done early, and had time to do a second tidy before my shift ended.
At times, the nurses would tell me I could slow down, but I never understood why. I treated the job as though others’ lives depended on me making sure it was perfect. One day my boss came to me and told me that Crusty had requested me. Crusty was a former Army nurse whose standards were high – very high. To be sought out by Crusty was a sign you did great work! She had never spoken to me directly, but it was an acknowledgment nonetheless.
During my time working at the hospital (in a uniform almost identical to the above) I realized if I didn’t do my best work, I put patients at risk. Was my job meaningful and did it matter? Of course it did. What I did mattered just as it much as what all the others did. So I became the best toilet scrubbing, floor mopping, dust eliminating, tile cleaning housekeeping aid there was. I was, and still am to this day, damn proud of it.
Far too often we compare ourselves to others and judge our worth against theirs. STOP THAT! When we do our best work, it is meaningful, purposeful and masterful!
Oh, and by the way, it’s important – very!
