Jo-Ann Dibblee lived in hiding for decades. She took on different names, changed her hairstyle and wore clothes that didn’t fit her to elude a man she feared would kill her or her children if he could find them.
When she was 16, Dibblee was sexually assaulted by her foster father in Penticton, B.C., but he never faced a courtroom. She brought her story to police, but they made no arrest for decades. She said she so feared for her safety that she routinely uprooted her life and moved from place to place, all to avoid detection.
At 52, Dibblee has lived in 49 homes.
But she is hiding no longer. After keeping her silence for 35 years about what happened, even concealing it from her family, Dibblee, now a Calgary resident, confronted her past and published what she had been hiding from in a new book, Frock Off: Living Undisguised.
